Color contrast and WCAG: how to fix hard-to-read text
Light gray text on white is the most common accessibility problem in AI-generated apps. Learn the WCAG contrast rule and how to fix it in your theme.
Why it happens
WCAG 1.4.3 requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 between text and background (3:1 for large text). Below that, text is hard to read for people with low vision, and for anyone using a phone in sunlight.
AI-generated templates love light gray secondary text, faded placeholders and soft-colored buttons. It looks great on the designer's screen and is unreadable in the real world.
How to check your app
- In Chrome, open DevTools, select some text and check the contrast ratio in the color picker.
- Extensions like axe DevTools list every element with insufficient contrast.
- Launch Check runs axe-core on your pages and counts how many elements fail.
How to fix it
Adjust colors to at least 4.5:1 contrast for normal text and 3:1 for large text (WCAG 1.4.3). Fix it in the theme color tokens, not element by element.
