HTTP security headers: the basics every site should have
HSTS, CSP, X-Content-Type-Options, Referrer-Policy and framing protection. What each header does and how to set it on your host or CDN.
Why it happens
Security headers are instructions the server sends with the page so the browser can protect your visitors: only use HTTPS (HSTS), don't let other sites embed yours in an iframe, restrict where scripts can load from (CSP).
They depend on your hosting, not your app's code. That's why they're almost always missing from AI-generated projects published straight to a default host.
How to check your app
- In Chrome, open DevTools, go to Network, reload the page and click the first request. The headers are under Response Headers.
- Tools like securityheaders.com grade your domain's headers.
- Launch Check lists which headers are missing on your home page.
How to fix it
Configure the listed missing headers at the server/CDN: Strict-Transport-Security (max-age=31536000; includeSubDomains), X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff, Referrer-Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-origin, a Content-Security-Policy that fits the app (start in Report-Only), and frame-ancestors/X-Frame-Options to prevent third-party framing.
